Elochoman Valley Road is a major log hauling route for a large tributary area of private forest land in the Elochoman River watershed. As such, it is a vital economic lifeline in SW Washington. This road formerly connected with destinations in Lewis County and was once SR 407 until turned back to the County by the State of Washington. The road is also used heavily in the fall by recreational big game hunters.

The existing road was narrow and the pavement condition was very poor. Lack of adequate base and deterioration of the asphalt surface made this a high maintenance segment. One log truck had gone off the road due to the narrow width.

Dig out repairs were accomplished in large areas and base rock was placed to provide adequate support. Additional width was provided. Where environmental features allowed, side slopes were flattened, and the roadside was cleared of hazards. Culvert ends were beveled to increase safety for errant vehicles. New aphalt surfacing was placed over the entire segment along with improved lane markings for better visibility. Log truck drivers remarked they wished the entire road was like this improved segment.
