Center Road along its present alignment started in 1916 as “Permanent Road #4”. Center Road has been realigned and improved over the years to serve as the main north-south county roadway in eastern Jefferson County. It is now the longest county road in Jefferson County with the third highest traffic volume recorded for county roads. The roadway section and alignment allow a posted speed limit of 55 mph over the 15 miles between Chimacum and Quilcene. The alignment, shoulder widths and shoulder surfacing have allowed the road to become the safe and the preferred bicycle route for bicycle tours and tourist during the summer and fall months.

The 2.26 miles of the road improved under this project was last repaved in the 1980s. Prior to being overlayed with asphalt in 2017, this section provided the poorest riding surface over the length of Center Road. The section just south of Chimacum (the highest ADT section of the road) had significant deterioration requiring full depth repairs as did a few areas farther south.

The required full depth repairs were completed and the roadway between MP 0.00 and 2.26 was overlayed with hot mix asphalt in August of 2017. The project included replacement of a deteriorated culvert that was allowing the roadway embankment to fall into culvert and create voids under the pavement. A combination of news releases, letters and daily e-mail updates to property owners and businesses allowed those impacted to plan for the project and allowed the county to provide daily updates on the construction progress. Alternating one way traffic with long lines and delays (three mornings spaced over the three week project) through one of the highest traveled intersections in the county caused the most “feedback” from the public. This was in part because the same inconvenience had been endured for a week earlier in the summer as a result of a WSDOT project. Post construction all public feedback has been positive.
