This portion of King Road was established in May of 1881. This road is a minor collector and serves as one of the only east/west routes in southwestern Lewis County, connecting travelers in the central part of the county and the city of Winlock to the Boistfort Valley area. The roadway also serves local farmers and the logging industry, since much of the property along the road is either farm or forest land.
The existing road was a 24 to 26 feet wide gravel road with numerous horizontal and vertical curves that followed the natural shape of the existing topography and did not meet current standards. The road also had a low spot near a wetland that would remain flooded during rain events, and also needed additional stormwater control.
The improvements included widening the road to a 28’ section, a reconstructed base, and Class A Bituminous Surface Treatment surfacing. Improvements were also made to the horizontal and vertical alignments and all curves were constructed to current design standards. Numerous new stormwater facilities were installed. Additionally, the intersections with Burri and Boistfort-Winlock roads were realigned as part of the project. After the project was completed, the residents along the road commented that it is nice that they no longer have to endure the dust from the road as they did previously.
