Cloquallum Road is a rural collector, 18.8 miles long and is the main truck route from Shelton to Elma. This 3/4 of a mile long section of the road included a large curve, which did not meet current standards, where several single vehicle accidents occurred in the past.

The overall goal of this project was to bring this section of roadway up to current county road standards, thus reducing the amount of accidents. The existing roadway had many localized areas of failing subgrade. The guardrail had been damaged and needed to be replaced. The roadway width was only 22’ wide and needed to be widened to accommodate the heavy truck traffic. Side slopes did not meet height requirements and needed to be flattened or barriers installed.

Such improvements include: replacing current failing road surface with a new 1.5’ gravel base and paved road section; replacing damaged and out-of-date beam guardrail; widening the traveled way and shoulders from 22’ to 34’; flattening of steep slopes to 4:1 or flatter; improving horizontal and vertical curves to meet current sight distant requirements.
