Jefferson - Upper Hoh Road

Preserve safe vehicular access to Olympic National Park by resurfacing 12.04 miles of Upper Hoh Road with a combination of chip seal and asphalt, installing 1,400 l-ft. of guardrail, and replacing signs and pavement markings. Given the age and deterioration of the existing pavement surface, this project is a high priority. The existing surface is a chip seal, applied in 2004-2005. The road exhibits rutting settlement, alligator cracking, and longitudinal cracking at numerous locations throughout the twelve mile length of road. This project will reduce the need for on-going maintenance activities and more costly repairs. However, Jefferson County does not have the financial resources to undertake this size of pavement preservation project and cannot justify allocation of limited county resources to a road that primarily serves federal land to an important Olympic National Park entrance. This project has been awarded a FFY2018 Western Federal Lands Federal Land Access Program (FLAP) grant in the amount of $1,567,273 and was rated by the National Park Service, Pacific Coast region, as its highest priority of all FLAP projects.
