Hollingsworth Bridge #460-6.25 is an untreated timber structure built in 1956 that spans the South Columbia Basin Irrigation District’s Wahluke Branch canal. Hollingsworth Road is a rural minor collector that is part of a system of minor collector roads located in the northwest corner of Franklin County.
Hollingsworth Bridge has recently been awarded grant funds through the FHWA Bridge programs. The funds will be used to replace the structurally deficient bridge. The west side of the bridge is also adjacent to an intersection that is hard to negotiate with a semi-trailer tractor and has on numerous occasions demolished the timber guardrail while turning onto Hollingsworth Road. The bridge was recently posted for load restrictions on both AASHTO & Single Unit trucks. This requires fully loaded farm trucks to find a different and longer route for hauling their goods to market.
The proposed improvement is to replace the existing timber bridge with a steel multi-plate arch structure. The proposed steel structure will meet the minimum design live load of HL-93 as specified in the AASHTO LRFD Specifications
