Centralia Alpha Road has served as an important transportation route in the Lewis County Community for well over a century. County records document a road survey dating back to October 1877, reflecting the longstanding importance of this route in connecting the Centralia and Chehalis area with the surrounding rural communities and the Alpha Prairie/Newaukum Prairie area. Centralia Alpha serves as a major access roadway for multiple residents in this area. It is one of the county's longest roadways, and serves as an alternate to state highways for east/west travel between the Centralia/Chehalis and Onalaska areas. There is also a large recreational campground located within the limits of the roadway project.
A section of roadway had an unstable slope, and surface condition distresses indicate degradation of the roadway base. The roadway was reconstructed by completing slope stabilization, widening, intersection improvements, and a structural section consisting of base course, top course, and paved surfacing. There were two horizontal curves that had a ball bank speed of 50mph, these curves were reconstructed to meet current design standards. There were two vertical curves, one had 360' of sight distance and a safe speed of 45mph, the other had a sight distance of 344' and a safe speed of 44mph, theses curves were reconstructed to meet current design standards. Existing lanes were 12' wide with minimal shoulders at spot locations, and have been widened to 11' lanes with 4' shoulders.
The improvement of 1.25 miles of Centralia Alpha Road has made significant and positive improvements to the roadway. The project included realigning and reconstructing roadway, mitigating slide, flattening slopes, crushed surfacing base and top course, hot mix asphalt surfacing, shoulder finishing, storm water, installing flexible guide posts, and constructing culverts. These improvements are greatly appreciated and will provide lasting benefits to the community. These upgrades improve safety, reliability, and access for residents in the area.
