Coal Creek Road is a minor collector connecting the Coal Creek, Eufaula Heights and West Longview communities with the City of Castle Rock. Several trucking companies use Coal Creek Road as a more direct route between Ocean Beach Highway (SR 4) to the west and I-5 to the east. Many other trucking companies use Coal Creek Road for timber hauling, rock hauling and farm -to- market purposes.

Coal Creek Road provides access for recreational users into adjacent timberlands. Recreational uses attract drivers that are unfamiliar with the roadway, increasing the importance of adequate safety features on the roadway.

This segment of Coal Creek Road has a pavement width of 24 feet with narrow gravel shoulders. The project will widen the roadway to meet rural minor arterial standards, which includes 12-foot-wide thru lanes and 8 foot wide paved shoulders. This will improve safety for bicycles and pedestrians. It will also improve sight distance by clearing vegetation and other obstructions along the insides of curves.
