This road is the designated east - west truck bypass route around the community of Eastsound, and provides access to the Orcas Island Airport north of Eastsound.
Because of its' high traffic volume, narrow to non existent shoulders, inadequate drainage, weak base material, and lack of pedestrian facilities, Mount Baker Road was a prime candidate for RAP funded improvements.
The project section was rebuilt with numerous geometric and safety improvements, particularly with the widened shoulders. Pedestrians and bikers continue use the road heavily and are delighted with the results. Emergency services now have proper road width to accommodate their vehicles.
