Old 97, as the name implies, is the old alignment of State Route 97, which now lies parallel and on the opposite side of the Okanogan River. Old 97 still provides a connection between the cities of Brewster and Okanogan, and is an important route for local farm and timber products as well as other freight and goods.

Old 97 was subject to weight restrictions during the spring thaw each year. The existing roadway had vertical and horizontal deficiencies, and had substandard widths consisting of 24’ BST surface and 1’ to 2’ gravel shoulders on each side.

The road was reconstructed with 9” of ballast, 3” of top course, and HMA, which alleviated the need for weight restrictions each spring thaw. The roadway was widened to 32’. Horizontal and vertical deficiencies were improved through ROW acquisition and roadway alignment and profile adjustments. Ditches and side slopes were flattened where practical, and hazardous objects were relocated, removed, or mitigated with guardrail to improve the safety aspects of the roadway.
