Lakeside and Fisherhill Roads are a north/south corridor that connects the communities of Glenwood, Appleton and Lyle. This multi-use corridor is used by the timber industry to move product from the area to market. The corridor also provides travel route for people living in Glenwood and Appleton to get to Hood River or The Dalles OR to work or service and back. The corridor is also used seasonal by motorcyclist, bicyclist, and tourist.
The existing road section was a mixture of clay and organic material topped with approximately 4" of CSBC. The existing road width was 20'. There were 5 substandard curves.
The curves were fixed by major realignment which included 236,800 C.Y. of Roadway and Hard Rock Excavation with 69,200 C.Y. of Embankment. The road was widened to 26' finished BST surface. All signing was upgraded and guardrail was installed where warranted. Because of the magnitude of the earth-moving work, the Fisherhill section of the project was closed for the duration of the construction. The detour route was approximately 22 miles. Since the road was closed, the public was not able to view the construction as it was being done. When the road was open to the public they were surprised and pleased with the results. Public Works is still receiving compliments related to how much improved the road is compared to its prior condition.
