The Snake River Road Project M.P. 5.78 to M.P. 6.39 is located along the Snake River approximately six miles south of Asotin, WA. Snake River Road serves as the only vehicle access for the Snake River and Hells Canyon from Asotin and points south.
Previous conditions on the roadway created driver safety concerns due to narrow sections bounded by significant dropoff to the river and steep basalt rock cliffs. This road segment did not meet current Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) and American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) standards for similar two-lane, low volume roadways.
The project scope included reconstructing and widening the roadway, improving vertical and horizontal alignment, removing a section of basalt rock cliff that overhangs the roadway, providing a widened unobstructed area from the edge of traveled way to the cliff face, and installing guardrail along the river side shoulder of the road.
