Bunker Creek Road was established on 8/3/1887. It is the main route through the unincorporated town of Adna, and provides access to the Bunker Creek and Lincoln Creek areas of Lewis County. It is accessed from State Route 6, also known as the “Ocean Beach Highway”. Adna, Washington, is a small, unincorporated community located just 6 miles west of Chehalis. Originally rooted in early 1870s settlement, the unincorporated town is defined by its agricultural and railway heritage, a unique history of name changes, and a strong sense of community centered around its local schools.
This project was submitted for RAP funding due to degradation of the roadway surface, in the form of heaving and potholing of the surface. These conditions indicated that the roadway subgrade was compromised and needed to be rebuilt. Lewis County staff determined the deficiencies would best be addressed by treating the subgrade with a cement treated base, followed by crushed surfacing top course, and HMA surfacing.
County forces, in conjunction with the grinding contractor, began the project by pulverizing the existing base and asphalt. Cement was then added to the processed material and mixed by the contractor. County forces brought the material to grade completing the cement treated base. After, the cement treated base was complete, county forces applied and graded the crushed surfacing top course in preparation for HMA surfacing. County forces then left the project, since the county forces portion of the project was completed. After clear separation by the county, the paving contractor was brought in and paved the newly constructed roadway base with HMA from MP 0.280 – 0.823. We received feedback from a retired Public Works employee who is the “unofficial mayor” of Adna, and owner of a business that is the local gathering place. He told us that many of the locals he came in contact with were very happy with the improvements that were made. They commented on the smooth ride of the road, and how it helped correct some drainage issues for several homes along the route. There were even Facebook posts with positive feedback regarding the project.
